Converting by yourself is expensive in time and effort, since every single tape is digitized in real-time. You also shouldn’t underestimate the storage space that is required and in addition acquisition costs for hard- and software. You can buy a used S-VHS recorder for about 150 to €200. Suitable software and a hard disk are required as well. Valueable time will however be the highest expense.

How you get back your S-VHS and S-VHS-C

We digitize your S-VHS tapes as MP4 files, which allows easiest handling. You can watch your videos on a computer, tablet or smartphone and share the files with your friends and relatives all over the world. Editing the videos is possible as well. Modern TVs give you the option for playing the videos directly on the device without having to connect a DVD player or video recorder. Just plugin the USB drive into the port on your TV, choose “USB” as input source and enjoy the videos. The storage device used for digitizing your S-VHS can either be an USB drive or external hard disk (with USB 3.0). You can buy a device from us or use an own one.

The S-VHS format

Developing the S-VHS cassette resulted in several improvements. S-VHS strands for “Super Video Home System”. A higher band width brought a better resolution and further disruptions could be reduced, since the video and color signal were separated. From the outside there are actually no differences between a S-VHS and VHS, except for an “S” in front of the labeling. The S-VHS exists with durations between 30 minutes and five hours and can’t be played in conventional VHS recorders.

It is similar when it comes to digitizing S-VHS-C tapes. They have the same size as VHS-C and with an adapter they can be played in a S-VHS recorder. Here you can also find an “S” in front of the VHS-C labeling. The S-VHS-C cassette has a significantly shorter duration than the S-VHS cassette and was developed for portable camcorders.
