You also shouldn’t underestimate the storage space that is required and in addition acquisition costs for hard- and software. You can buy a used MiniDV camcorder for about 50 to €200. Suitable software and a hard disk are required as well. Valueable time will however be the highest expense.

The format

Digital Video (DV) was firstly launched to the market in 1994. The term “Digital Video” includes the cassette tapes DV, MiniDV, DVCAM, Digital8, HDV, DVCPro, DVDPro50 and DVCProHD. MiniDV pushed through especially for amateur filmmakers, since this format was more compact than the original DV. Also a MiniDV tape was less expensive.

Playing MiniDV

To play a MiniDV, it requires a camcorder or a DV recorder. You can watch the recordings directly on the camcorder’s display. Alternatively you can connect the camcorder to the TV.
